Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus chakra is found between the navel and the chest, and is called Manipura. Related to the color yellow, the third chakra is active with self-esteem, warrior energy, and the power of transformation; it also manages digestion and metabolism. Digestive conditions, eating disorders, feeling like a victim, or experiencing low self-esteem can all be evidence of an impaired and inadequate solar plexus energy point. By contrast, perfectionism, anger, hatred, and too much stress on power, status, and recognition are the signs of an over productive third chakra. The third chakra governs self-direction, self-control, personal will and physical energy. A proper balance results in high self-esteem and the ability to accept responsibility, while assuming personal authority over life.

From a psychological standpoint, the solar plexus chakra is the center of creativity and expression. The third chakra energy is reflected in the desire to create and to imagine, and to manifest desires in the physical world. If this energy is too potent, an individual may become single-minded and obsessive, bossy and egotistical, and may have difficulty relaxing or letting go. Those in which this energy is feeble may lack motivation, will power, self-confidence, drive and creativity.

The eyes are this chakra&;s associated organ of perception which connect to the universal energy of the sun. The eyes wander around the world, and so does the mind. There are many eye exercises in yoga, such as palming and gazing. In palming, the hands should be rubbed together to warm them up, then cupped over the eyes while the person leans forward, resting their elbows on the ground in a seated position on the floor or on the knees if seated in a chair. This exercise directs the healing power of the third chakra through the hands to the eyes. In gazing, practicing control of eye movements encourage people to keep the mind from drifting. In the Bhagavad Gita, it is advised that students concentrate on the tip of the nose in meditation. Mandalas may also be used to practice eye control. These are simple geometric figures that are self-drawn or found in books or websites. Gaze at the objects from different distances for several minutes at a time then try visualize these objects internally. Gemstones like jasper, golden topaz and yellow tourmaline; and flower essences such as chamomile, golden yarrow and peppermint are also useful to enhance and energize the solar plexus chakra.
